The Season of Bursting Forth

The Season of Bursting Forth

Ahh Spring! Sunny days that make you feel alive (amidst rain showers and windstorms that remind you it’s still early yet). Baby animals peaking out of the brightest green grass imaginable. The sudden urge to take off shoes, sink hands into soil, plant seeds. Increasing days, awakening energy, a bit more ambition for outdoor tasks of all kinds. Spring is aptly named as the season of bursting forth, and we all feel it and yearn for the promise of warmth and light to come.

Here on the farm, we have been busy bees sowing seeds, building greenhouses, weeding perennials, tidying up the farm and gearing up for another great season of abundance, efficiency and fun. So far there are 18 of us working hard of a wide variety of projects, with seven more joining over the next three months. When the soil dries and we can work the fields, we switch gears to fertilize, cultivate and plant. When it’s soggy and wet, we dig and process carrots and clean our work spaces.  All of the time, we are seeding, seeding, seeding in our greenhouses, growing tiny plants into robust starts to transplant out when weather allows.

How fitting that our CSA begins among this fecund time of new beginnings, hopeful promise and optimism! We are truly excited for what we have planned in the fields for you this season; long time favorites, a few new surprises, and loads and loads of beauty and nourishment in the form of vegetable bodies.

This year our focus on the farm is efficiency. We have invested in some equipment our crew has been asking for to make their jobs easier, more ergonomic and efficient, and with better results. Some of these include a new cultivating tractor, soil steamer, flat filler, paper pot transplanter, improved tomato trellising system and upgraded greenhouse watering system. All of these upgrades allow our crew to work smarter and complete tasks with less wear and tear on their bodies.

We also will be finishing our new farmstand over the first half of the year, putting the finishing touches like a plant nursery, signage, artwork, more coolers, shelves and landscaping into place. We are so excited to bring this project to fruition and to be able to offer a wider variety of products from our fellow Jefferson County farmers. Stay tuned for more info on a grand opening, and seeing the space evolve over the coming months. We will get there slowly but surely!

Thank you for signing up for the 19th season of our CSA program, and entrusting our team to grow produce for you. We hope you will be delighted by the abundance from our fields and wish you the best of health this season!
