A New Farmstand Brings New Offerings
One of the farm’s biggest accomplishments this year was planning, constructing and building a new farmstand. It was a long time in the making, made possible by a grant from the WSDA, and was intentionally designed to fit the farm’s needs and our offerings to the public. For example, we made a bigger space that could accommodate more cooler & freezer space, allowing us to have the space for all our produce in peak season and to offer products well into our off-season and preserve perfectly good veggies. Additionally, as you may know, we also offer plant starts in the spring until early summer, and this winter we will be building a greenhouse next to the farmstand where shoppers can buy starts that are protected from the unpredictable spring weather.
Another intention with the new farmstand is to offer hyper-local products that aren’t just produce! We are incredibly lucky to grow produce in such a vibrant food community here in Chimacum, and we want to showcase and offer our neighbors’ specialties. Perhaps you saw if you visited the farmstand last week, but for the first time we offered Chimacum Valley Grainery bread in our farmstand! It filled the entire farmstand with the delicious smells of fresh, warm, yeasty goodness. The Grainery has a field parallel to the farmstand, so if you’re a frequent farmstand visitor you literally saw the grain used to make your loaf of bread growing across the street – so cool!!! If you come to the Farmstand looking for bread, look for a black tote on the table in the back corner, where we keep the loaves enclosed to maintain freshness.
Another new edition to the farmstand, coming soon, is a *new* winter offering from the incredible local dairy, Mystery Bay Farm, made by our very own beloved Red Dog alum, Molly – a soft, spreadable cheese, fromage blanc. Fromage blanc is made from cow’s milk and has a mild flavor, making it a super versatile ingredient for both sweet and savory cooking – that is, if it can survive being gobbled up before dinner time. We hope these new additions are exciting to folks and make it easier to get everything you need for your week when you stop by our farmstand.
