Summer and the Growth of Fruits, Veggies and People

Summer and the Growth of Fruits, Veggies and People

Summer is here and there is no better time to be on a farm than now! Personally, I find June to be a very exciting month. The weather teases us of what’s to come in July and the crops’ growth seems to accelerate by the day. The snap peas are plump and the strawberries a vibrant red. Cilantro and dill have sprouted from the soil. Cauliflower heads are on the verge of emerging from their wrapped leaves and broccoli crowns are swelling up. The corn is small but quickly growing. Zucchini and cucumbers are around the corner and green beans will surely flower soon. The greenhouses are full of fragrant basil, green tomatoes and fast growing peppers.

Almost every week in the moth of June our farm crew learns how to harvest, wash and pack a new crop. This year’s crew is full of sharp, quick learners who are eager to help wherever they are needed. It’s amazing how some folks who have never even stepped foot on a farm can become so helpful and efficient to our farm in just a few weeks time. From moving irrigation lines and riding the transplanter to cutting loose greens and bunching kale, this crew does it all. While I love to observe the growth and change that occurs with crops around the summer solstice, this year I have especially loved to watch my coworkers improve and evolve as farmers. I have a feeling that this season will be a special one and I can’t wait to see the fruits of our labor!
