Poems Grown in the Fields
Raab
As daylight stretches
in comes an awakening
erupting new growth
A flower’s mission
sending bright stalks to the sky
and just before bloom
We free them from time
sweet, tender from stem to leaf
a farmer’s haven
Crane
Wings spread wide and lift
over a vast flooded field
sunlight reflecting
Off water, blinding
the farmer driving the truck
toward distant corners
She doesn’t see it
two loose feet floating below
the bird as it lands
Tulips
Bright green triangles
rippling and stretching skyward
escape the earth first
Leading the way for
heaven’s flower to burst forth
shy and green at first
Until the spring sun
blushing the bud from the south
ripens her petals
