Counting Down and Looking Back
As I begin my countdown to my last day at Red Dog Farm, I find myself reminiscing about the person I was when I first arrived here in July 2019. Who knew I would love farming so much! I have learned so much about vegetables, farming, the PNW, people, and about myself.
A few skills that have become valuable in my day-to-day work at the farm are expert pallet jack operator and “human scale.” “Human scale” refers to the ability to guess the correct weight of an object “right on the money,” whether it be a 25# root bag, 40# box, 0.5# loose greens bag, or a 6# cabbage, almost every time.
I have gone through 4 pairs of boots, busted open 4 pairs of pants, put holes through almost every pair of my Darn Tough socks (I’ll be sure to send them in for a replacement!), and curated a wardrobe that has a permanent onion smell. In my final winter at RDF, I grew a love for Patagonia Capilene long underwear—thanks to whoever donated these to the farm, I wear them every day!
A few veggies I have grown particularly fond of are fennel, garlic, shallots, and kale, although all veggies are pretty good in my opinion. 🙂 Have you tried our carrots? Seriously the best.
In the packshed, I have listed to countless hours of Kacey Musgraves, Tyler Childers, Maggie Rogers, The Strokes, John Legend, Glass Animals, Frank Sinatra and so much more.
So much has changed in the last 2.5 years and I feel grateful to have been part of it all.
Thanks for sharing these moments with me,
~Paige
